Between Eden & Earth, Gardens of The Islamic World, Photographs by: Ovidio Guaita
In the gardens of the Islamic World, the images of Paradise as described in the Holy Quran inspired the Muslim designers and set the guideline that defined the "Islamic Garden". Yet to what extent there is a formal layout, has evoked numerous debates among renowned scholars in the field. The Quran recalls the Gardens of Eden with flowing rivers, cool shades, lofty mansions, springs, vegetation and fruits. More importantly the Quran describes the gardens of Paradise as the great salvation with companions pure and holy, in peace and security, with honour and dignity, no fear nor grief, eternal rejoicing in one's nearness to God. The Quranic images accordingly evoke the imagination of the designers, and various interpretations of the visions of Paradise became the framework for gardens within the Islamic World
A book that explores the history and philosophies behind the greatest Islamic gardens. In a visual journey through the colourful array of photographic images, the major surviving Islamic gardens are vividly brought to life, illustrating the glories of the past. Examined here are the splendours of the gardens of Spain, the marvels of Morocco, the courtyard gardens of Syria and Egypt, the enchantment of Ottoman Turkey and much more. This book was published in conjunction with a photography exhibition of the same name.
