DR. ZAKARIA BASHIER was born in the Sudan and was educated at the universities, of Khartoum, Durham (England) and Pittsburgh (U.S.A.). He served at the King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah as Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies and the Islamic Foundation as senior Research Fellow. He lectured in Philosophy at the University of Khartoum until 1980, when he was invited again by the King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah to teach Islamic Studies. His publications include: The Islamic Path, to Social Change (Arabic), Jeddah, 1977; The Meccan Crucible, London, 1978; and Muslim Women in the Midst of Change, Islamic Foundation, 1980. HIJRA: STORY AND SIGNIFICANCE is a timely work in which Dr. Zakaria Bashier gives a moving account of the story of Hijra, a story of endurance and triumph in the face of seemingly insuperable adversity, of idealism and courageous faith in the possibility of a just aid free Islamic state. Hijra symbolises the eternal imperative of Islam: to make the society submit to One God alone.
